What is the Big Scrub?
Prior to European settlement, the Big Scrub rainforest covered 75,000ha, extending from the coastal plain inland from Ballina to Lismore, and from Meerschaum Vale to Byron Bay and the Nightcap. It was the largest expanse of lowland subtropical rainforest in Australia, one of the most bio-diverse places on the earth, and it descended from the great Gondwana rainforest that covered Australia 40 million years ago.
By the year 1900 European settlers had cleared the Big Scrub extensively, due to the government requiring farmers to clear the forest on their land before they could gain freehold title. Now only 1% of the Big Scrub rainforest remains in small fragments.
These fragments have since been degrading and have been overrun with over 140 different environmental weeds. Environmental groups have been working hard to restore and regenerate these remnants and even facilitating restoration of rainforest on land from which it had been previously cleared.
These environmental groups need our help and support, and through community engagement we can ensure that the Big Scrub flourishes one again.
